Castroreale (Royal Fortress) is a small hill town south of Milazzo in the province of Messina. While dating back to prehistoric times under Arab rule, the town also included a strong Guidecca (Jewish community) during medieval times. Today its many churches have impressive art works, and its elevated setting provides many magnificent views. Upon arrival, we will walk to Piazza Marconi to visit the the 15th Century Church of Santa Maria Assunta (if open), renovated in the 17th and containing many impressive artistic works – especially its 7 sun dials. Continuing on Corso Umberto I, we will view the tower remaining from the 1324 castle built by Frederick II of Aragon over the ruins of an Arab fortress.

After lunch, we will head to Piazza Peculio and walk through arch behind Monte di Pietà, where we will see the ruins of Moschita, the synagogue of the Guidecca that remained active until around the end of the 15th Century.
